I. MUSIC
Music involves rhythm, timing, composition, story-telling, plots, characters, concepts, ideas, creativity, and more, all essential in creating visual forms of art. From the point of view of the person creating the song, they are limited to only communicating with sounds, but they are free to use an unlimited variety of instruments to express themselves with.
II. DRAWING & PAINTING
Drawings and paintings take you out of music's intangible and imaginative realm, and into a phyical, detailed form. All of the essentials of music can be translated into color, composition, rhythm, plots, characters, etc.. You've heard the phrase "a picture's worth a thousand words," well, I think pictures are the next logical progression to story telling, taking musical concepts to a deeper level. From the point of view of the artist, it's limited to 2 dimensions, and a single illustration can really only tell one moment of a story, but they are free to use an infinite variety of tools to convey their thoughts.
III. MOVIES
Movies take on the benefits of music, and combine it with the instant communication of visual art to create what I consider a higher form of art that can convey the artist's inner vision extrememly well. The only downfall to a movie is that it is locked into a strict timeline, and the viewer will experience it the same way every time.
IV. INTERACTIVE
Take music, images over time, and add interaction, and you have something sensational. Never the same twice, this is artistic expression at it's highest. Video games and websites are two clear examples of an artist dipping into multiple skills and putting them together to create a deep, rich experience, as well as communicate thoroughly and efficiently.
This is not to say that video game makers are "superior" to musicians, it's simply a list of goals I've set for myself to master as an artist. It basically breaks down to the fact that if I want to make a video game, I'll have to know ALL of the art forms that make it up. |

Flash Animation/Programming
I've been animating and programming in Flash since '99. Since then, I have worked on numerous projects for web sites, cd-rom presentations and games. I frequently combine techniques of traditional mediums, as well as elements from other programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, 3D Studio Max and more.
Illustration
My major at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design was Illustration. In my studies, I became very comfortable with acrylic, oil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, collage and pencil sketching. Nearing graduation, I really focused on digital illustration; that is what I enjoy most. I like to combine Adobe Illustrator artwork with 3D Studio Max outputs.
Audio Production
With a slew of audio editing programs under my belt, including PowerTracks Pro (woo, that was a while ago!), Cakewalk/Sonar, Vegas/Sound Forge, Reason, Cubase, my Roland SP-808, Roland MC-909, and Yamaha AN200, I've taken strongly to using a combination of the MC-909 and Cubase for song writing.
Digital Video Editing
Probably the most frustrating medium on earth... (everyone and their dog has their own custom codec that no one else seems to be compatible with). I've got a serious grip on the latest Adobe After Effects and Premiere, and I've used Final Cut Pro with relative ease, translating what I know about After Effects. |
